Jill, I just now saw this note about Dads getting together. You wrote it in April of last year, and I don't know how I missed it or perhaps I already responded to it, but I would love to get together with other Dads to talk about being parents of children on the Autism spectrum. We're a unique group of men, there is no question about that. I'm going to give that some thought and get back to this group about it. Perhaps one evening a month we could get together for a few hours, or (this might be a better idea) perhaps we could join up with Lorna Catford's support group which meets once a month and has totally blessed me.

Also, Jill, if there were ever a perfect time to check out our church for Autism-friendliness, it would be this coming Sunday. We've got Ken Mansfield, who managed Apple Records for the Beatles last 5 albums (the White Album, Let it Be, Abbey Road, Sgt. Peppers and Hey Jude) will be speaking there about his journey and his sudden Spiritual awakening. You can find our Sebastopol Christian Church info here: http://www.sebchristian.com. I'll keep my eye out for you!

Gosh, I just saw all these comments that have been left for me over the past several months! I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, Jill. I suppose you could call my church "Autism friendly", as when Maddy was unable to speak sometimes and unable to answer even the simplest of questions, we just let the teachers know to make them 'yes or no' questions and they never complained about her being difficult and they accomodated her as best as possible. She's high functioning and doesn't meltdown so they didn't have to deal with that, although there was a couple times when she began to cry uncontrollably and couldn't speak to tell them why. They just held her and sent someone to find me. I don't believe we have any children with extreme Autism symptoms although I believe our church would welcome anyone and make whatever accomodations they might need to for a given child.

I don't have the internet at home so I'm not able to check my page as often as I would like.

That is exactly what prompted me to set this group up, Jill! I would love to get together with other fathers on a regular basis. We are a unique group of parents, are we not? I've been told that God gives special children to special parents. Of that I am convinced! :-D

I hope we can set up an information area, to list our kids' ages and talk about their abilities and disabilities, to set up compatible play dates and to support one another in having nights out to dinner, for example, for the very special parents with such very special children who DESERVE a break now and then! Amen? Amen! :-)
